Planning for happiness. How to set goals for later life

Moving home often inspires changes in lifestyle.

A new home in a different community leads people to make significant changes to their daily routines. You may find yourself spending time with different people and living life differently. When people retire (or stop full-time work) they gain more time. They have fewer commitments. And more freedom. Suddenly, it is the perfect opportunity to unlock your potential and achieve success in new ways.

How to create a bright new future

Leaving a full-time profession often means starting completely afresh with a new lifestyle. Some people fear long days (especially in winter) without sufficient stimulation every day to retain their joie de vivre. What ideas do you have for identifying and planning a new lifestyle?

Why not sit down with your spouse and friends and come up with some ideas together. They may remember ideas you once had that were put on hold for other commitments. Now is the time to bring these aspirations into reality.

When you want your whole life to change, you need to start by coming up with ideas.

Start with a blank sheet of paper

At the top of a blank sheet of paper, write your overall aspiration, for example: “What can I do to create a fulfilling lifestyle after retirement?”

Underneath, write at least 20 ideas. Even if your ideas need further thought, write them down and you’ll generate more in time. Your first thoughts will be simple and obvious. Your last 5 may become harder. Or perhaps you have so many ideas you keep on writing – don’t stop. Think about what you’d like to create in your life – a business, part-time job, hobby, skill. Let your imagination flow and your capacity for producing more ideas will increase. One idea will lead to another and soon you’ll be ready to plan the actions needed to bring your ideas to life.

Prioritise your ideas. Which one would you like to do first? What do you need to do get started? Creative thinking like this keeps the mind sharp and alert. You’ll think up so many ideas that you’ll run out of time to carry them all out. Keep your ideas list and your plan to hand and share it with your loved ones. Watch your calendar fill up with actions which you absolutely love to do every day of your life.

How to live a life without regret

Three 100 year olds were interviewed and their inspiring films appear on YouTube. Their life lessons seem surprisingly simple yet have resulted in them feeling happy, lucky and enjoying life every day.

  1. Cliff, who is 101 advised: “Be helpful and keep going. 101 is only a number. You live for the day. I make my own bread. I don’t have many failures, if I’m making a cake and it fails it becomes a pudding. A spot of whiskey occasionally helps. I feel no older than I felt 30 years ago.”
  2. Tereza is 103 and as she reflects on her life she says: “I have so many fond memories. I’ve always been lucky. I’ve never been unlucky. Everything makes me happy. I love talking to people. When I go shopping, I don’t want to come back. I grew up in Czechoslovakia, mother grew food in the garden. I’ve done everything I wanted to do. I’m very strong. I can live happily ever after because of my beautiful memories. Help people as much as you can – and you will be paid back hundredfold.”
  3. John who is 102 smiles and says: “I had an easy life, even in the RAF during the war. I loved jazz. I’d stay up all night listing to jazz. Eventually I settled down and became a pharmacist. You must keep up with the times (he says while using his tablet to order his shopping online).

Like most people, these people have experienced sadness. They have outlived their children and love their wonderful memories.

“If you are living happily, that is the first remedy for all illness,” says Tereza, “Because you are living in perfect harmony.”
